But they are more than just experts at what they do. They also work hard to keep patients as comfortable as possible and to make sure patients have all the information they need about the procedure. Dr. Ali performs many kinds of oral surgery, helping many types of problems.

What types of oral surgery does Dr. Ali perform?

Dr. Ali can help patients with issues, such as impacted teeth and problems with the jaw.

Impacted teeth

Impacted teeth are a very common reason for oral surgery. Many people have to have their wisdom teeth removed because they are impacted, but other teeth, such as the cuspids or bicuspids, can be impacted as well.

Teeth are “impacted” when they are not aligned properly when they emerge from under the gums. They also may be trapped between the jawbone and the gum tissue. This can cause pain and swelling of the gums and even infection. If they are left untreated, they can cause permanent damage to the gums, other teeth and even the jawbone. In some cases, impacted teeth can lead to tumors or cysts, which can destroy parts of the jaw.

Jaw problems

TMJIf left untreated, jaw problems can be very painful. One jaw problem that can be remedied with oral surgery is when the upper and lower jaws don’t grow correctly, which means the patient has a “bad bite.” This can make it hard to eat, speak, breathe and swallow. Braces and other orthodontic appliances will probably be used before oral surgery to try to treat this, but if these treatments don’t work oral surgery may be able to help. Oral surgery can be used to move the jaws into a more natural position.

Another common jaw problem is TMJ, which stands for temporomandibular joint. If you put your fingers right in front of your ears and open and close your mouth, you can feel this joint at work. Problems with this joint can result in pain when chewing, talking and even yawning; headaches; and facial pain.

Oral surgery for TMJ may be a last resort. Usually, the dentist will recommend that the patient uses braces, orthodontic appliances or other methods to try to find relief before suggesting oral surgery.

Can I be sedated during my oral surgery procedure?

Dr. Ali wants his patients to be as comfortable as possible during oral surgery, and he offers sedation dentistry. There are different types of sedation, ranging from awake but relaxed to asleep. You can discuss the best type of sedation dentistry for you to have during your procedure with Dr. Ali.

How can I take care of myself after oral surgery?

Dr. Ali will give you detailed instructions on how you can take care of yourself after oral surgery. And of course, if you have any problems or any questions you can always give Avatar Dental Care a call.

However, there are a few general tips you can follow, and a few things you can expect.

  • You may be given a prescription for painkillers, but if not you can try over-the-counter painkillers.
  • If you are prescribed painkillers, don’t take them on an empty stomach.
  • Whatever kind of painkiller you take (prescription or over-the-counter), you should take it soon after the surgery, before the anesthesia wears off and any discomfort begins.
  • To help with pain and swelling, don’t use heat until after the first day. Heat can cause the blood clot at the surgery site to come loose and the bleeding to begin again. Use a cold compress for the first 24 hours — 20 minutes on the outside of the cheek and 20 minutes off.
  • It is important to try to get adequate nutrition, even though you may not feel like eating. Start off with soft foods, such as ice cream, thin soups, pudding, gelatin, mashed potatoes, and yogurt.
  • You will heal faster if you avoid aspirin and aspirin products (which can thin the blood and cause bleeding), alcohol, smoking, carbonated beverages, and using a straw (which can make blood clots come loose).
  • Expect to rest for the first day after surgery (or longer if Dr. Ali advises it). Don’t overexert yourself for two to three days after the surgery — avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise.

How much will oral surgery cost?

Dr. Ali will be able to tell you the costs involved when you come in for your consultation. Avatar Dental Care takes many different kinds of insurance, and also has financing options available.
